Gary is Sydney born and bred, and the son of Malaysian migrants. His parents were not Christians, but his mother’s death from cancer, midway through his time studying medicine at the University of Sydney, caused him to question his atheist views and ultimately put his faith in Jesus. After university, Gary worked as a doctor, then did a ministry apprenticeship at Chinese Christian Church Sydney and the University of New South Wales before his time at College.
“Moore College has set me up for a life-time of ministry. Not in terms of teaching me everything there is to know, but giving me both the building blocks and the tools to keep me growing in both my knowledge of God and my ability to bring this knowledge to bear as I lead my church. The other thing that Moore College has provided is life-long friendships. Our college year still meets up regularly and is a great support to each other.”
After Moore, Gary returned to serve as a pastor at Chinese Christian Church Sydney, before planting a church with them. He then moved to St Paul’s Carlingford & North Rocks, where he was later appointed as Rector. In December 2019 he was consecrated Bishop of Western Sydney.
